Today I did the first round of jurying for the Mayor’s Art Show. There are three jurors. We looked at 425 entries and have to choose 40 to 50. It was interesting to see which pieces each of the jurors chose and that while we don’t agree on the “best” ones we do agree on the work that doesn’t quite get there. We need to create a show that balances a variety of techniques, media and taste. I think tomorrow I’ll want to add a few more things. I was disappointed in the paintings and a little sad to see that most of the photo entries were digital but I guess that is to be expected. When we convene tomorrow we will go through the entries we’ve selected so far, discuss them, and come to an agreement. There are only a small handful of works that we have all three selected. It is a long process.
For Crescent Village I have all but five paintings at the wharehouse studio and have completed most of the work as a whole. It feels great to see it come together. I still have to arrange the individual pieces but I have decided I will hang them so that every other image is a photograph. I like moving them around and seeing how different panels work with each other.
Mark Woolley Gallery (and yes this is a link but it doesn’t look like one – more for me to learn) called today to tell me they want to keep my paintings indefinitely. Great news. Although the work is there only on consignment it is great to have a place to refer people that is in Portland. The gallery is moving downtown as of september 1st to a nice space. I feel this is a really good step for me.
